Michigan Personal Injury Attorney – Automobile Insurance – Under-insured and Uninsured Coverage

Hello my name is John Alexander and I’m a Michigan Personal Injury Attorney. My office is located in Bingham Farms, Michigan and we service clients state-wide but primarily Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Ccounties.

Today, I want to talk to you about Michigan automobile insurance, specifically Michigan uninsured motorist coverage and Michigan under-insured motorist coverage.

If you don’t have it I suggest that you get it now. What that means is, if you are hit by a Michigan driver that has little or no insurance, then you can make a claim against your own Michigan insurance company, if you have these benefits, and you sustain some pretty serious injuries.

For example, Michigan law provides for people to drive on the road with only $20,000 of insurance. That amount was figured out way back in the 1970s and hasn’t changed since. So you would want something called ‘under insurance coverage‘. So a driver that hits you and causes you serious injuries and they have a $20,000 policy or $50,000 insurance policy they are obviously underinsured so you may make a claim against your own insurance company if you have some pretty high limits. I recommend at least $500,000 in under-insurance coverage in Michigan.

By the same token if you are hit by somebody that has no auto insurance, then you want to make a claim against your own Michigan insurance carrier for uninsurance coverage. And what that means is if you’ve got that benefit and again I recommend about $500,000 worth of auto insurance, if the driver has no insurance, your own insurance company steps in the shoes of the driver that hit you, and you litigate the claim against your own insurance carrier.

Now bear in mind, your insurance company is not going to fork over lots of money to you. They’re going to litigate this claim. And generally speaking if you have a good Michigan personal injury attorney on your side, you can collect about 7 times more than you could on your own.

So if you have any questions about uninsurance coverage or under-insurance coverage, please call me at 248-290-5600.
